Intervenor Program
This program has been operating since June 2003 to support an individual who is deafblind. Funded by intervenor funding through the Canadian Deafblind Association, intervenors assist individuals to function in their environments by providing consistent visual and auditory information to compensate for deficits in vision and hearing. Sign language and gestures are the primary methods of communication, and tasks are completed hand-over-hand. Individuals are encouraged to do as much for themselves as possible (intervention means working with, not doing for, a person).
Intervention facilitates the ability of an individual to interact with their environment. The intervenor provides the person with basic motivation, sensory input, and a means of receptive and expressive communication, as individuals who are deafblind require assistance in gathering information from their environment, i.e., the intervenor is the eyes and ears of the individual who is deafblind.
